Mr. Edmond Copeland, affectionately known by family and friends as “Sonny Buck,” was the son of the late Cornelia Leach Copeland and the late Rev. L. R. Copeland. He was born on February 19, 1937, and peacefully departed this life on Monday, September 1, 2025, at the blessed age of 88 years.
Edmond was a man whose life reflected hard work, integrity, and kindness. For over four decades, he was a dedicated employee of Southern Marble Works, where his diligence and strong work ethic became widely respected. After his retirement, he continued to share his gifts of laughter, wisdom, and encouragement with those around him.
Known for his gentle spirit and easy-going nature, “Sonny Buck” had a way of making everyone feel welcome in his presence. His infectious humor, genuine conversations, and warm smile left lasting impressions on all who were blessed to know him. Whether spending time with loved ones, enjoying the company of lifelong friends, or simply brightening the day of a stranger, he lived a life that demonstrated compassion, humility, and love.
Later in life, Edmond became a familiar sight around his community as he was often seen riding his bicycle to run errands for himself and his friends. That simple act reflected his independence, generosity, and willingness to always lend a helping hand.
To cherish his memory, Edmond leaves the love of his life, Letha Mae Hickman; three devoted siblings, Katie Copeland Powell of Lumberton, NC; Mildred Sims (the late Bennie Sims); and Edna C. Howell (the late Arthur Harrell), both of Queens, New York. Preceding him in death were his siblings John Copeland, Leroy Copeland, and Vastine Simmons.
Edmond’s family circle was lovingly extended to include his bonus daughter, Rose McMillian (Fred); bonus grandchildren, Tabitha Shaw, Alvon McMillian, and David McMillian; and bonus great-grandchildren, Dayquan, Demond, Shanyeya, Radesha, Shatara, Kadashja, Tanequa, and Destinee. He also leaves behind cherished sisters-in-law, Janice Stephens and Earline McLellan, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever treasure his memory.
Though he has departed this earthly life, “Sonny Buck’s” legacy of love, laughter, and faith will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His journey reminds us that a good name, a cheerful heart, and a life well-lived are the greatest gifts one can leave behind.
