Mrs. Lula Mae Carmichael, 80, of Laurinburg, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 10, 2025. She was born on August 19, 1944, in Rowland, North Carolina, to the late Rosevelt and Lela Mae Mosbey.
Lula was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend whose life was defined by love, faith, and service to others. A fierce advocate for justice and truth, she lived with quiet strength and used her resources to uplift those around her in ways both subtle and profound.
Her greatest joy was her more than 60-year marriage to her beloved husband, James W. Carmichael, a childhood friend whose companionship blossomed into a lifetime of devotion, mutual respect, and unwavering love.
Lula attended Southside High School and began her career as a nurse’s aide before becoming both a Master Barber and a Master Herbalist, serving the community for over 50 years. Known for her kindness, wisdom, and unmatched gift for numbers, she was affectionately called the “human calculator” by her family. She was a woman of deep faith, an avid reader, a talented painter, a gifted cook, and someone who found joy in sharing in the happiness of others.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Carmichael; her daughter, Rhonda Carmichael; and her sister, Brenda Mosby. She is survived by her sons, Ronnie G. Carmichael of Hope Mills, North Carolina, and Kenneth Carmichael of Boston, Massachusetts; three grandchildren, Toccarra Dailey of Springfield, Massachusetts, James E. Carmichael of Durham, North Carolina, and Alexandria Whitehead of Raleigh, North Carolina; and four great-grandchildren, Elijah Dailey and Emmanuel Dailey, both of Springfield, Massachusetts, and Kamari Whitehead and Kayden Whitehead, both of Raleigh, North Carolina. She also leaves behind a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.
Mrs. Carmichael’s life was a testament to faith, compassion, and dedication, and her legacy will continue to inspire all who knew her.
