Retired Command Sergeant Major Johnson Obituary

Wyatt Johnson, born in 1928 in Eufaula, Alabama, where he was raised and later graduated from high school, passed away peacefully. Faced with financial constraints that prevented him from attending college, he chose to enlist in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, LaJoan Johnson, as well as his parents, Douglas and Alberta Johnson. Additionally, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Douglas Johnson Jr. and Alpetty Johnson.

Upon joining the Army, Wyatt's assignments encompassed 11 major combat campaigns, notably including Korea and Vietnam. Throughout his distinguished military tenure, he achieved the rank of Command Sergeant Major after 28 years of dedicated service, during which he completed an impressive 125 parachute jumps and earned numerous awards for exceptional achievements, meritorious service, as well as medals and decorations for his valor in combat.

Upon retiring from military service, Wyatt transitioned to civilian life in 1976 and settled in Lumberton, the hometown of his beloved wife. In 1985, he embarked on a successful journey into local politics by winning a seat on the Lumberton City Council, representing his precinct, No. 2. His dedication to public service remained steadfast for an impressive 25 years, during which he made valuable contributions as a council member. Notably, Wyatt was an active participant in various civic organizations.

Wyatt and LaJoan took great pride in their role as parents to four children: Roxanne Henley of Fayetteville (Raymond), Grace Thompson of Bladenboro (Jerry), Anita Johnson of Raleigh, and Charles Johnson of Raleigh (Pam). They also cherished their special relationship with a daughter figure, Linda C. Thompson (Howard). Additionally, their legacy continues through a host of beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, and friends who held a special place in their hearts.
